I’ll be sharing my progress as Artist in Residence at Fort George as part of the upcoming Festival of Museums later in May. It’s a chance for visitors to explore the museum: ‘The Highlanders’ Museum (Queen’s Own Highlanders Collection) covers three floors of Fort George’s former Lieutenant Governors’ House. The museum has roughly 20,000 artefacts and an estimated 10,000 documents and photographs. The museum is the largest regimental museum in Scotland, outside of Edinburgh. Alongside Fort George itself: ‘Stand in awe of Fort George, one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It was built in the wake of the Battle of Culloden (1746) as a secure base for King George II’s army. The imposing fort was designed by Lieutenant-General William Skinner and built by the Adam family of architects. Fort George took 22 years to complete, by which time the Jacobite threat had subsided. But it has served the British Army for the almost 250 years since.’ As well as the Festival of Making: ‘This year, Scotland’s museums and galleries have their biggest calendar of events ever planned for the Festival of Museums weekend from Friday 19 – Sunday 21 May, with a massive 130 events to choose from all across the country! From little ones to big kids, there’s sure to be something for everyone in our packed programme.’
