Helen de Main: You Know, Things Like That
26 November 2017 until 11 February 2018
Over the past year Helen has been meeting with a group of local women at Platform. Brenda, Foxy, Isabelle, Jean, Lorna, Mags and Margaret are all members of our knitting group, who meet weekly to work on collective and individual knitting projects. They are also all friends.
Inspired by the Consciousness Raising groups that emerged from the Women’s Movement in the1960s, Helen has instigated a series of open discussions
with the group. These have taken various themes as their starting point from which conversations have opened out and expanded. The women have shared thoughts on education and work / housework, as well as reflecting on experiences of being daughters, sisters, wives, mothers and grandmothers.
Through looking at these women’s lives, marked by commonalities and difference, remarkable events and mundane ones, the exhibition celebrates the strength, resilience and beauty that exists within everyday experience.
