SEMINAR: ABOLITION, MEMORY & TIME

An afternoon of presentations and discussions to coincide with the closing weekend of Graham Fagen’s exhibition.

Saturday 16 April, 12 – 4.30pm
Ticket price includes lunch £10 (£6.50)

Speakers:

Dr Michael Morris, Liverpool John Moores University.
Michael Morris’ talk considers the dual role of the cultural sphere in overturning a widespread ‘collective amnesia’ about the slavery past.
He will discuss Graham Fagen’s exhibition in the context of a growing stream of novels, plays, documentaries and articles, which ask searching questions of Scotland’s imperial role.

Dr Karen Salt, University of Aberdeen.
Karen Salt’s talk raises the question: Do we have spaces where free discussions can take place and no one historical viewpoint dominates?
She will discuss how we publicly navigate the political and racial tensions that emerge when we discuss past perceived harms amongst and within communities who still perceive these harms as reverberating into the present.
