This show is entitled ‘Cân i Gymry,’ a track from the album ‘Libertino’ by Welsh band, Datblygu. Cân i Gymry is a song about Welsh culture and politics, with sharp observations about the Welsh mindset. I’ve always been inspired by bands such as Datblygu, and I’ve often used the lyrics and titles of songs in my paintings. Music and art go hand in hand for me.
I grew up in Porthmadog, just a few doors down from the iconic record shop ‘Cob Records’. The shop was my music library and art gallery. Visits to ‘Cob’ would transport me somewhere else. I’d listen to LPs and pore over the record covers. These early experiences had a huge influence on me and my painting. As a student in England in the mid to late 80’s, listening to Welsh-language bands connected me with my language and history.
Being a painter can be a solitary existence, so the music I play in my studio fills this void and creates a lively work environment. These works are dedicated to musicians, friends and family, who’ve helped us believe in ourselves and what we, as a country, Cymru, can be.
