During this six-week course James Winnett will introduce participants to the various techniques and tools involved in the ancient art of carving stone. Participants will work with soapstone, limestone and sandstone to create small pieces and larger relief carvings. James will share insights from his experience of working on public art projects including an opportunity to see current stones being developed.
Participants will learn about the properties of different stones and will work with a variety of tools including chisels, files and rifflers. This course is suitable for beginners and those with some carving experience. It has been designed to explore creativity through stone rather than formal carving techniques. It will be structured to respond to the interests of the participants.
Note the class runs on the following dates: 25/6, 2/7, 9/7 (no class 16/7), 23/7, 30/7, 6/8.
