Lada Wilson | “Connecting the K[6]abinets of Curiosities” project | St Andrews & Strathkinness | 14 July – 7 September 2024

Two contemporary art exhibitions will be created for this project by artist, curator and educator Lada Wilson.

Initially, the Telos Box, a telephone box gallery in St Andrews will become a ‘cabinet of curiosities’. A custom-made cabinet will be created and will contain 72 objects, which reflects the 72 window panes of the K6 model phone box. Objects will be selected from an artist’s point of view to address the question: “How do we communicate today?” They will range from found objects to objects made in response to conversations with people who have influenced Lada as an artist and curator. For some, for various reasons, replicas will be made. Each window pane will also feature a word providing a context. As part of the project, objects will be transported by bike from the 201 Telephone Box Gallery in Strathkinness to the Telos Box in St Andrews and gradually added to the display at the Telos Box.

The project will start with an informal opening at the Telos Box in St Andrews, on Sunday 14 July 2024 at 3 pm.

Do come along and talk to Lada about communication and about the object that you would like to place in the cabinet of curiosities. You will be able to see and hear about the objects Lada choose to start the project. Some of them might be from St Andrews Preservation Trust.

Additionally, there will be a number of meet-the-artist events throughout the months of July and August, fortnightly (dates and times tbc). These events will be publicised on the Telos Box and 201 Telephone Box Gallery Instagram and on social media.

about the venues

The Telos Box is a newly established gallery in a phone box adjacent to the Younger Hall in St Andrews that explores the intersection of space an practice and responds to the theme of Telos – a Greek word used by Aristotle to mean “final cause of a natural organ or entity or of human art… the supreme end of  human endeavour”.

The 201 Telephone Box Gallery is a non-profit, artist-led organisation in the village of Strathkinness near St Andrews, established in 2018 by Lada Wilson. The Gallery, which is in an iconic red phone box, is the smallest contemporary art gallery in Fife. Exhibitions have featured artworks by local, national and international artists inspired by the curatorial theme of ‘communication’ (in its broadest sense).
