This evening taster session will introduce you to kurinuki, form of ceramic hand building which originates in Japan. It is a more sculptural approach to making with clay compared with the usual methods of wheel throwing or methods of hand building.

Kurinuki or ‘carving out’ involves using a block of clay, carving the exterior form and hollowing out the interior to search for a form. Kurinuki is an instinctual and sculptural way of working with clay to make functional ware, allowing the form to evolve and reveal its self during the making process. Over this evening session you will be able to make two pots, finishing with coloured slips.
