Martin Lukáč, 2025
Hunted Projects is proud to present Bingin Gardens, a solo exhibition by New York based Slovak artist Martin Lukáč.
Lukáč’s work is a reflection of an intuitive and uninhibited creative process. His paintings echo the influence of Abstract Expressionism while embodying the spontaneity of graffiti and elements of pop culture. For him, painting is more than a medium—it is a way of existence. His compositions come alive like surreal characters from a comic book, with amorphous shapes in bold, vivid colours emerging from dynamic, free-flowing lines that act as instinctive punctuation marks.
Working in series, Lukáč repeatedly explores the same motif, systematically varying it across his canvases until its full potential is realised. This repetition and reduction of forms not only shape his artistic language but also define his entire practice. The motifs he selects are not mere subjects; through their continuous reinvention, they transcend representation, becoming the very essence of the painting itself.
In Bingin Gardens, Lukáč embarks on a creative journey across continents, shaping a vibrant new collection over three months. The process began in his New York studio, where linen canvases were primed with colourful gesso before traveling to Bali. Settling into the tranquil surroundings of Bingin Lodge and Bingin Garden, he laid the foundation for the series—an exploration of landscapes, serenity, and the recurring motif of a sun umbrella.
The journey continued in Phuket, where the paintings evolved through additional layers and Thai-inspired natural forms. Immersed in the rhythm of nature, Lukáč embraced the movement of wind and light, deepening the symbolism within each painting.
Martin Lukáč graduated from the Technical University in Košice with a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 2013, and in 2016 he received a Master’s degree in painting from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. He was an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2014 and at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. His works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and North America and are part of numerous private and public collections. In 2018, he participated in an artist residency program in Brussels, and in 2019, in Los Angeles.
