Beverley Hood, Skin study, collage on paper (2022)

The exhibition presents recent collage and painting works by Edinburgh-based artists Beverley Hood and Catherine Street, who have a shared interest in bodily experience and representation.

In Beverley Hood’s collages, we see images of faces and limbs cut from magazines reconfigured to create complex and unsettling hybrid beings. In other works, she uses collaged generative AI to create beautifully monstrous renderings of fleshy compositions that bulge and multiply on the page.

Catherine Street chooses to paint on top of pages from medical textbooks. Scientific understandings of the body are partially obscured by smears of oil paint and thin trickles of colour that suggest networks of veins or nerves. Her work on paper also bears a relationship to performance where drawings become records of specific moments in time.

The exhibition brings together new works on paper that consider the meanings and conditions of our intricate and often perplexing physical relationships with ourselves, one another, society and the environment.
