In 1991, St Benedict’s R.C Church in Glasgow, a stunning example of mid-century architecture, was demolished. This highlighted the urgent need to protect the best of Scotland’s Modernist buildings, and to record them.

Scotland’s post-war building boom saw modernist buildings spring up all over the country. Scottish architects such as Basil Spence responded to ideas born in the International Modernism and Bauhaus movements to create schools, universities, civic centres, and hospitals. The new spirit of optimism and progress was evident at a domestic level too as people rushed to redecorate their homes in the latest style.
