A fun experimental session introducing you to the creation of Photograms

Photograms are a camera-less darkroom process where objects are placed on photographic paper, creating abstract photographic compositions through light and shadow.

Reaching back to the origins of photography in the 1830’s photograms were popularised in the 1920’s by Dada artist photographer Man Ray and the Constructivist El Lissitzky as a challenge to traditional photography. This graphic process brings chance and mystery into printmaking.

A great introduction to darkroom printmaking, we’ll familiarise you with the darkroom, B&W print chemistry and take you step by step through the photogram process.

You’ll have the opportunity to create up to five of your own photograms to take away at the end of the session.

We have a collection of found objects to share at the darkroom, but you are welcome to bring your own favourite objects, something simple or symbolic. Leaves, feathers and glass work well. The printing paper is 12 x 20 cm so bear this in mind when sizing your objects.

Weather permitting, we may also walk down to the beach to forage for objects.

This will be a small group of up to 5 participants. Suitable for all levels of experience.

Cost : £ 75.00 with all materials included.

Plan for the Workshop:

· Brief history of the photogram

· Demonstration of photogram creation and processing

· Coffee and foraging for objects (weather permitting)

· Hands on creation of your own photograms
