A to/from B: Cultural Interchange Beyond Languages and Locations
14:00 on 12 September 2015
OPEN DISCUSSION EVENT
2-4pm on Saturday 12 September
Seventeen, 17 Belmont Street, Aberdeen AB10 1JR
In partnership with Seventeen and Robert Gordon University, SCAN (Scottish Contemporary Arts Network) and WAGON are delighted to invite you to an afternoon of open discussion.
This event is part of WAGON’s current art project A to/from B – a year-long silent conversation online at a-to-from-b.tumblr.com followed by a physical exhibition. Participating are two contemporary visual artists who were given no information about each other before the exhibition and share no cultural background – Martyna Benedyka, a recent graduate from Gray’s School of Art and Kaori Yamashita, a Japanese artist working internationally.
In the discussion, as their response to the project each speaker will present visual material which they think resonates with A to/from B. This involves screening some selected film extracts – including Correspondences: Jonas Mekas – José Luis Guerín (2011, directed by Jonas Mekas and José Luis Guerín, production of CCCB: Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona), Video Letter: Shuntaro Tanikawa and Shuji Terayama (filmed in 1982-3, production of ArtDays INC.), and Flash in the Metropolitan by Nashashibi / Skaer (2006, 16mm film, courtesy of Nashashibi / Skaer, LUX, London and Murray Guy, New York).
By keeping this visual conversation format, the aim is to deepen audience understanding and interpretation of this complex project, and also to think about how we make intellectual or physical relations with others across languages, locations or cultural backgrounds.
