Between Bruntsfield and Tollcross - a photographic essay

14 September 2018 until 5 October 2018
Upright Gallery, 3 Barclay Terrace

Photography exhibition by Inzajeano Latif

While many tourists and locals in Edinburgh were mooching around Stockbridge, the Old Town or Porty this summer, Inzajeano Latif was engaged in photographing the occupants of the various commercial properties between Bruntsfield and Tollcross, In this slightly ‘offbeat’ area, Latif captures the people who run a diverse range of businesses found in two blocks. One on Bruntsfield Place, another on Barclay Terrace. The area is home to many businesses, among them, hairdressers, cycle shops, charity offices and shops, art galleries, artisan bread makers, restaurants and cafes.

Through the series, Latif not only creates a doorway to these small businesses but also explores how this intersection between Bruntsfield and Tollcross is imagined by their owners. In addition, the series and the exhibition aims to celebrate and make visible the people who work here, bringing the commercial community together and help put it on the map.

Latif’s work has been exhibited widely, most notably at the National Portrait Gallery in London, where his image ‘Female Boxer No. 3’ was the signature piece of the show. He has also exhibited at the Jerwood Space (London); the Host Gallery (London); the Getty Gallery (London) and the Empire Gallery (London), and his work has been part of the Tim Andrews group show. Latif’s projects, ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’, ‘Al-Ghurba (The Exile)’ and ‘Girls’, have been exhibited in China, the US and Europe respectively. He has had a solo show at the Arab–British Centre in the UK and been a finalist in numerous prestigious photography competitions. He has been commissioned by The Telegraph, Stella Magazine, The Times, The Guardian and more recently the iconic Time Magazine.
