Cally Buchanan: Any Human Heart
19 September 2019 until 28 September 2019
After studying painting at Leith School of Art (2016), Cally Buchanan was awarded the Painting Prize and a scholarship to the Royal Drawing School, London. She has previously exhibited across Scotland and in 2019, she was selected for the Ruth Bouchard Self Portrait Prize. She currently lives and works in Scotland.
Any Human Heart presents a new series of oil portraits by Cally Buchanan which captures her desire to articulate the instability and ambiguity of identity and the self.
Buchanan’s preoccupation with representational portraiture drives her to continually source the ‘unknown known’ of the human subject from both her daily life and from the vast historical canon of portraiture.
Through her subject matter, composition, medium and style, Cally investigates and suggests the notion of absence which ultimately encourages the viewer to consolidate and often complete the work. This leads to an uneasiness of vision and elegance of mood in her works.
