Exhibition: Eric Cruikshank - A Stillness That Contains Movement

8 March 2019 until 29 March 2019
The Briggait

Wasps and the Briggait are delighted to present Eric Cruikshank’s exhibition, A Stillness that Contains Movement, representing a selection of works on paper covering a wide range of the artists output. This is Cruikshank’s first solo exhibition in Glasgow.

Taking landscape as an initial starting point, Cruikshank’s paintings are not about literal presentation; instead the focus is on the emotive qualities of place. Using an objective palette tied to the Scottish countryside, colour acts as a vehicle to reveal the picture planes underlying points of reference. With the structure, design, and colour harmony being grounded in the everyday, the viewer is encouraged to readdress notions of their surroundings, where the familiar is opened up and made full of possibility.

As the surface does not immediately reveal the full range of hues and gradations, the work requires a concentrated engagement with the qualities of paint and painting itself. Completed using a complex process of addition and subtraction of medium, the works are anything but a solid monochrome. Instead, they often darken toward their edges, leaving their centers to emanate a subtle glow, emphasizing the rich overtones of multiple layers of paint.

The pieces constantly renegotiate themselves, intensifying the moment when the picture plane shifts and transforms as the viewers position changes. On approaching the work, colour pulses in constantly shifting patterns, on withdrawing; these patterns blend, bleed and fuse into a vibrant continuous field, inviting a highly tuned visual attentiveness. The refined shade and contour lead the eye around the piece, gently engaging the viewer in the act of seeing, where their relationship with the work is one of continual change.
