Iain Sarjeant – Out of the Ordinary
Moray School of Art

6th – 24th September 2019

Part of FLOW Photofest – a biennial international photography festival taking place across the North of Scotland.

Much of my photography is spontaneous in nature – wandering, exploring, discovering, and observing – often in everyday places. Out of the Ordinary developed from this approach, and reflects my interest in people’s relationship and interaction with their environment. The series explores the kind of places that most of us walk or drive past every day – often places where the infrastructure of human habitation interacts with the natural environment. These are dynamic landscapes, constantly being altered, and part of the fascination for me is the element of chance involved – stumbling upon scenes that often look very different the following month, day or even hour. The project is on-going and for me has become a journey through everyday Scotland. – Iain Sarjeant

Iain Sarjeant’s Out of the Ordinary offers a vision of a nation in flux; having spent the last few years making photographs throughout Scotland. Truly democratic in approach, he photographs the mundane and absurd nature of contemporary Scottish life with vigour. His ongoing collection of photographs serve as a study of the Anthropocene, where even the most remote and scenic areas of the landscape bear the hallmarks of human intervention. Whilst being based in the Highlands of Scotland, Sarjeant has travelled the length and breadth of the country to create a startling yet understated document of everyday Scotland, documenting common place yet often overlooked landscapes to create a visual record of modern day Scotland.

Out of the Ordinary was first exhibited in the group exhibition ‘Ambit – Photographies from Scotland’ in April 2019. This exhibition as part of FLOW Photofest and is one of a series marking its 30th anniversary (September 2019 – September 2020).
