Rosalind Lawless

My practice is strongly influenced by my immediate surroundings. I use commonplace imagery to organise the pictorial space, using forms that occupy and give perspective within the substrate. I strive to physically construct the space within the composition of my work and aim to recreate the space whilst questioning ideas such as the relationship of form to material and symmetry/asymmetry, acknowledging the link between formal and abstract. The work revolves around a sense of history, of the spaces that inspire and the history of the journey making the work, this leads me to a connection between the spaces that I use to make the work and the work itself.

While physical environment of place is concrete inspiration, it’s the subjective experience of being in a new place, unfamiliar and strangeness of navigating, this is reflected and resonates in the process of making the work through the perception of the place. Responding always to shifts between perspectives, real space and flat surface. I continue to explore the imagined and observed within architecture through the process of Layering, repetition, cut-outs, washout and transforming. Colour is an imperative component within my work, although the colour comes from intuitive reaction it is based and triggered by memory of colour within a place. The detail and form within architecture, intricate lines, structures and vast space are continually explored in my work.

Rosalind Lawless was born in Glasgow in 1978 and studied Fine Art Printmaking at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen from 1999 to 2002. She graduated with a Masters of Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, London in 2004. In 2002 she won the Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Award culminating in a three month scholarship to Florence. In 2003 she was winner of the Daler Rowney Drawing Prize Royal College of Art, London, in 2004 the Tim Mara Trust Award from the Royal College of Art and in 2005 the Joe Hargan Award Paisley Art Institute, Glasgow. In 2008 and 2009 she was the recipient of the Glasgow Art Club Fellowship Award and Inverarity One to One Travel Award respectively from the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, where in 2013 she became elected member.

The everchanging colours and shapes of the Aberdeenshire landscape is the inspiration for this 2019 Exhibition. As the countryside alters with the seasons, the work responds to transient shifts of light, capturing moments in colour.

Monoprint has an ephemeral quality and the process is used to capture the light passing over the terrain. The same can be said of the painted reliefs but instead of a printed line, the physicality of the cut line imposes a new, more rigid structure.

Oxford born Hetty Haxworth, studied at the Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited in the UK and abroad for the past 25 years. Her work has been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, The Scottish Society of Artists and selected touring shows to Ohio, Australia, LA, Denmark and Brussels. She now lives and works from a studio in rural Aberdeenshire .
