The Clipperton Project
10:00 on 3 September 2011
Scottish Book Trust, Sandeman House, Trunk’s Close, 55 High Street, Edinburgh EH1 1SR
Clipperton is an uninhabited French island located 1250 kilometers from the Mexican coast. The island’s history just as much as its ecosystem are utterly unique, and continue to reside well outside human experience, something increasingly rare in today’s world. The project has invited a group of 16 artists and scientists from 6 different countries on the three-week journey to this completely isolated French atoll in November 2011. The scientists will undertake studies on Climate Change and the Biosphere whilst the artists produce work based on the history of the island and the voyage there.
This event explored the ideas behind this exceptional, multi-disciplinary project, and reveal what the participants hope to achieve from taking part. Speakers comprised:
Gordon Liddle, Consultant (chair)
Jon Bonfiglio; Project Director and Expedition Leader
Charles Engebretsen: Sculptor
Elaine Shemilt, University of Dundee
An event organised by the Visual Arts and Galleries Association during the Edinburgh Art Festival
