Notice: Open Call for Artists

Closing date 1 May 2021

Circus Artspace are looking for three contemporary artists with a socially engaged practice to work with different communities within the Highlands to produce a NOTICE billboard commission.

Selected artists will receive a fee of £1000 each and it’s anticipated the project will take place over 6 months from May – October 2021. This project is supported by Creative Scotland.

We are inviting expressions of interest from artists seeking to develop a billboard intervention in the Inverness area which would be progressed through engagement and partnership with one of the following community organisations:

  • Highland Pride aims to preserve and protect the mental and physical health and social welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people in the Highlands. They also aim to promote fair and equal treatment for LGBTQ+ people by challenging the stigma and discrimination experienced by them at both community and personal level.

  • Highland Migrant & Refugee Advocacy (HiMRA) aims to empower and bring together people who identify as migrants and refugees, to strengthen community integration and social inclusion in the Highlands.

  • Special Needs Action Project (SNAP) exists to improve the lives of young people with additional needs by providing social experiences, building self-esteem, and encouraging independence. They provide opportunities for making friends and socialising supported by our caring and experienced staff and volunteer team.

This will be a socially engaged project which will be rooted in a strong dialogue between the selected artists and their paired community group which will facilitate the voice of these communities through visual means. This spirit of collaboration and engagement is at the very core of this project.

Outcomes: a visual intervention which will respond to the theme of Celebrating the Cultures and Identities of our Place to be installed at a billboard site within Inverness. This will be developed in collaboration with one of the community group partners listed. The artists will also be expected to undertake a series of engagements with their paired group (preferably in person) which will reflect the values of Circus Artspace. Artists will be expected to take part in a one day walk and talk event once all the billboard commissions are on public display.

Deadline: 1 May, midnight
