Student Archivists at Project Ability

Role and responsibilities

Project Ability are looking for two enthusiastic students to work together to create and structure the extensive archive of artist Cameron Morgan.

Morgan is a multi-talented and prolific artist who has attended Project Ability’s Aspire studio for people with learning disabilities since 1991. Morgan has extensive exhibition achievements and in 2016, he was awarded a lifetime fellowship to the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). In 2023 The National Gallery of Scotland purchased a collection of his screen-prints. He has exhibited in many different venues, exhibitions and festivals, nationwide and internationally. He is highly skilled and a master in several mediums including; ceramics, mural painting, oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, printmaking and textiles. Morgan continues to maintain a prolific studio practice.

Through this role, you will research the extensive collection of Morgan’s artwork and achievements, working to organise and document the collection. You will have access to Morgan’s comprehensive archive of artworks and work with the artist to establish a timeline of their achievements. Further opportunity will be given for the students to design and deliver a series of online events to showcase the new archive and launch it to audiences.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Organising our collection of Cameron Morgan’s work by recording all details related to the artwork: dimensions, material, year of production, photographing, provenance etc.
  • Assisting with the physical organisation of our archive room.
  • Establishing a database, inputting data to log all of the details about each of the works.
  • Making the archive accessible online.
  • Curating an online showcase featuring work from the archive to introduce Morgan’s work to new audiences.

The successful students must demonstrate:

  • Strong organisational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Capable at photography
  • Ability to work independently as well as being part of a small team

Professional development

You will receive the support of key members of the staff team including the Exhibition, Marketing and Volunteer Coordinators, Administrator and Technician for tasks such as:

  • photographing and recording Morgan’s work,
  • storing artwork in a safe and appropriate manner,
  • creating a database and filing system.

You’ll start with an initial introduction day which will inform you about the organisation, their core staff and the work they do. A health and safety induction will be included, touching on topics such as safeguarding and disability awareness.

Time, dates, pay and location

  • Commitment: 5hrs per week for the period of 45 weeks.
  • Pay: £12 per hour
  • Location: 103 Trongate, Glasgow, G1 5HD, Scotland.
  • Application deadline: 5pm Friday, 31 January.
  • Placement start date: Tuesday, 1 April.
