About
Diana A Sykes is Director of Fife Contemporary which has an office base in St Andrews but delivers a programme of visual art and craft across the region through varied partnerships from the local to the international. With a small team of three colleagues her work is very hands-on as well as strategic. She relishes the opportunity to work directly with artists as well as develop a range of high quality experiences for broad audiences. Exploring the dialogue between the disciplines of visual art, craft and design underpins much of the programme.
Following an MA in Art History at St Andrews University (with scholarship year at Sweet Briar College in Virginia) and a Diploma in Museum Studies at Manchester University her first post was as Curator/Driver of the Scottish Arts Council’s Travelling Gallery which took her on adventures from Dumfries & Galloway to Shetland. Sadly her HGV license has now lapsed…As Director of the Crawford Arts Centre in St Andrews she oversaw its move from University to independent art centre. Links were maintained with the University, especially the School of Art History, with certain exhibitions based on unique research and connections. With the closure of the centre in 2006 Fife Contemporary was created as a new way of working free of a venue and reaching new audiences.
Diana is on the board of Fife-based artist-led organisations Off the Rails Arthouse at Ladybank and Lateral Lab in Kinghorn.
