MoMA - Museum of Model Art and ZIPStudio join MERZ in Sanquhar
MERZ occupies the former lemonade factory in Sanquhar: the new Museum of Model Art (MoMA) and ZIPStudio occupy Sanquhar’s former abattoir(!). Together with A’ the Airts community art centre, the Tolbooth Museum and former Town Hall (as a performance space) a ‘Sanquhar Cultural Quarter’ is emerging in this small conservation town in Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway.
Accommodation in the artist’s Bothy at MERZ and a second Bothy under construction at ZIP is joined by two art-houses, representing in small caravans the work of Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch, marking the 100th anniversary of MERZ and photo-montage.
Meanwhile Marta Sienkiewicz-Sutherland and Alan Robinson are exhibiting innovative stained glass panels at MERZ.
The opening is scheduled for the upcoming Sanquhar Arts Festival (24-26th May) to coincide with Spring Fling, Dumfries and Galloway’s premier Open Studio event and D&G Arts Live supporting creative performance across the region.
