De-Compression: New Graduate Residency - Dundee
4 July, 2019–19 July, 2019
Wasps is delighted to invite artists and designers who have recently graduated to submit proposals for a funded residency in the Project Space at Meadow Mills, Dundee. This opportunity is open to recent graduates from Scottish colleges/institutions, who have graduated during 2018 or 2019 (undergraduate or postgraduate).
This De-Compression Residency provides an invaluable opportunity for freshly graduated artists /designers to reflect and re-contextualise their practice, post degree show, within our beautiful and very large studio space. They will have time to devote to their practice in the aftermath of the degree show rigours and consider their past, present and future works.
Wasps will support the cost of up to 3× 2-hour mentoring sessions with members of the Meadow Mill Curatorial Committee.
On completion of the residency, the successful applicant will have two options.
Option 1: they will be invited to present their work in the form of an exhibition, workshop, talk or performance – whatever formal/informal output is suitable for their practice.
Option 2: choose not to present but create a written document of approximately 1500-2000 words that will act as a reflective statement outlining the residency activities and insights gleaned from them.
What you get
24-hour sole access to a very large, private and well-lit flexible studio space on the 4th floor of Meadow Mills Studios (located on West Hendersons Wynd) offering panoramic views across Dundee and beyond. You will have a desk, a chair, wall sockets, full access to kitchen + toilet/shower facilities and a lift.
One artist/designer will be selected for the residency and will receive £350 to cover expenses. They will also have access to structured mentoring support from the Curatorial Panel, and contact with established creative practitioners who may share the same specialism and be able to offer further insights.
Throughout the De-Compression Residency, support will be given by the Wasps Arts Enterprise Officer and the Curatorial Panel based in the building.
Residency Dates 2019
We are offering the residency from the 9th September to 6th October. The exact starting dates are flexible and can be discussed with the successful applicant.
Please take special note
No accommodation is provided for this residency. This opportunity will likely suit those graduates either staying on in the city and its environs or for those graduating from elsewhere who may be returning to life on the east coast. There is no restriction for those who are prepared to travel and stay temporarily with family/friends etc, but an important consideration when preparing your application.
