SCAN Member Survey 2026 – Your voice matters!

Closing date for responses: 5pm, Monday 6 July 2026
Founded in 2012 by the visual arts sector, SCAN continues to be led by the sector through our membership and governance (all of our trustees are members). SCAN members actively shape the work of our organisation through their energy, vision and insights.
Over the last 12 months, the SCAN team have been refining the membership offer and dedicated members programme. We want to support members to build sustainable practices and initiatives, create valuable peer-relationships and advocate for real change.
Every two years, SCAN will now issue a comprehensive Member Survey to gather demographics, key data and member insights for our future programme and advocacy work. There is one Member Survey for Individuals and one Member Survey for Organisations (all sizes).
The visual arts ecosystem in Scotland is a dynamic and interconnected network of people, places and civic infrastructure. SCAN is proud that our membership represents all facets of the Scottish visual arts community, from individual artists, arts workers, technicians, curators and educators to grassroot community projects and artist-led initiatives, alongside organisations large and small. Many of Scotland’s leading art organisations, festivals, production facilities, studios and galleries are members.
Our members work across all parts of the country – from the Highlands to the Borders, the East coast to the West – living and working in Scotland’s major cities, towns, rural villages and islands. Crucially, it is through building a geographically wide and multi-perspective network of both individuals and organisations that SCAN can gather in-depth analysis on the visual arts sector – both as a whole and for specific communities of practice.
Contemporary art spaces cultivate creative expression, offer a site for interrogating political and social issues, explore alternative economic models, and developing innovative attitudes to equalities, care, and collaboration. We regularly collate the meaningful contributions of our membership to the cultural sector and share case studies and best practice with government and policymakers, and other key decision makers.
By filling out this survey, you will be giving us a clearer understanding of what our members need to build a sustainable practice and organising models in Scotland. We want to know what challenges you face and how we can help to advocate for and support you in the future. We will share the results of the survey in a public report later in the year.
