Join renowned Scottish painter and printmaker Alfons Bytautas RSA to create your own artist’s book. In this experimental workshop, we’ll explore the various methods and materials we can use to create a unique book using a simple accordion-fold structure.
The accordion book format was developed from the scroll, a long-rolled strip of paper that is still used for brush painting and calligraphy in China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Over time, instead of being rolled, the long sheets were folded to make a book like structure which allows the pages to be unfolded and displayed.
In this masterclass, we’ll explore innovative ways of creating artworks to display in our books using simple monotype printing and collage before experimenting with accordion folding techniques to create our book structures. Participants will be encouraged to be creative and explore various methods of creating their own unique books.
All materials will be provided but you should bring source materials such as sketchbooks and photos that will act as inspiration. This masterclass is suitable for complete beginners and experienced artists alike.
