SCAN members in Edinburgh during festival month

Every August, SCAN member organisation Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) takes over Scotland’s capital, with a programme showcasing the city’s vibrant contemporary art scene alongside a specially curated strand of festival-led events and exhibitions. EAF’s partner venues include a large number of fellow SCAN members: Edinburgh Printmakers, Collective, Fruitmarket, Talbot Rice, Ingleby, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Stills, Sierra Metro, Jupiter Artland, Travelling Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and National Galleries Scotland – all with their own exhibitions to go see.

But that’s not all – several SCAN members are hosting their own events during festival month, with lots of projects to explore outside of the main festival programme. Here’s our guide to these shows.

deluxe miscellanea at Number 22
15 + 16 August

Deluxe Miscellanea are two artists based in the Highlands who make and sell art, gifts and objects, including hard-carved seashells, painted eggs and whimsical amulets. During their appearance at community hub Number 22, described as ‘somewhere between the gallery and gift shop’, the duo will be making, selling and showcasing their wares, opening up discussions about the future of how artists can make their practice financially sustainable.

Until 25 August

SCAN member Shelagh Atkinson is exhibiting with her fellow Wasps studio holders at Patriothall in Stockbridge, one of Scotland’s longest-running artist studio complexes. The show includes a range of artwork – ceramics, jewellery, mosaic, painting, photography, print and tapestry – with an open studios event on the final weekend.

David Risley at Hunted Projects
Until 31 August

Night time walks around Copenhagen are the inspiration behind Night Is Also A Sun, an exhibition from painter David Risley at Hunted Projects’ new space in the West End. Risley’s playful paintings mimic the windows he sees on his walks, with each frame inviting the viewer to peer inside and imagine the lives being led inside.
