Summer workshops from SCAN members

This summer, a host of SCAN members across Scotland are offering workshops and courses across a range of creative specialisms – from pigment creation in rural Fife to print-making on Shetland – suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill or advance your expertise, Scotland’s workshops, studios and production facilities have something for everyone – here’s some picks from the SCAN team.

Glazing Intensive
21–24 July, Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Lumsden

Located in rural Aberdeenshire, the Scottish Sculpture Workshop provides in-depth courses for practitioners looking to expand their skills and experiment with ceramics, metal, and stonecarving. This Glazing Intensive is an opportunity for artists and makers working in clay to learn how to mix, formulate and apply a wide range of finishes – working with SSW’s bespoke in-house glazes, while creating your own.

Analogue Street Photography + Film Processing
26 July, Narture, Ayr

Bakery-cum-artist-run-space Narture offers workshops in everything from songwriting to life drawing, all year round. This summer, photographer and educator Mike Stone is hosting a series of analogue photography workshops for those keen to learn the ways of the darkroom – including this introductory session on the techniques of classic street photography, which will be followed by guidance on how to process film by hand.

Signwriting
26 + 27 July, Dundee Contemporary Arts

The DCA Print Studio is a world-class art production space, where artists exhibiting in the DCA’s gallery spaces make new work alongside workshop participants and local makers. Despite its name, the Print Studio doesn’t just offer printmaking workshops: this fun workshop in signwriting offers guidance in the basics of this traditional handcraft – including brush-handling skills, illustration and gold-leaf techniques – with participants going home with their own handmade sign at the end of the weekend.

Etching + Aquatint
9 + 10 August, GAADA, Shetland

Based in Burra Isle, Shetland, GAADA’s Toogs Artist Workshop is a space for artists, designers and members of the public to experiment with a range of printmaking and creative processes. As well as offering accessible open hours and one-to-ones with technicians, GAADA also runs dedicated courses for people looking to learn specific skills, or make specific things – from letterpress prints to collaborative zines. In August, a new all day workshop launches, introducing participants to both copperplate etching and creating tone through rosin aquatint.

Darkroom Photography: Introduction to Colour Photography
9 + 10 August, Stills, Edinburgh

Find some calm and concentration in the midst of festival month with this analogue colour photography weekend course at Stills in Edinburgh. After learning the basics of colour theory and looking at the work of contemporary photographic artists working with colour, participants will head out into the Edinburgh streets to shoot a roll of film, then learn how process it in Stills’ darkrooms. You’ll leave with a set of high quality C-Type prints that you’ve printed by hand.

Drawn to Print with Fraser Taylor
9 + 10 and 23 + 24 August, Print Clan, Glasgow

Specialising in screenprinting, Print Clan is Glasgow’s only open access textile printing studio, with learning opportunities ranging from quick tasters of skills and techniques to in-depth weeks-long courses. These weekend-long courses offer the chance to learn from celebrated artist and textile de

signer Fraser Taylor, while experimenting with the relationship between the hand drawn and printed image.

Foraged and Found: Making Natural Art Materials
12–15 August, Forgan Arts Centre, Fife

Located in rural north-east Fife, Forgan Arts Centre offers a unique environment for creative learning, with a focus on environmentally sustainable practices. Across the four days of this workshop, specialist teachers from Old Mill Arts will guide participants to make their own high quality art materials using materials from nature, with elements of colour theory, art history and contextual information threaded through each session.
