Join renowned Scottish painter and printmaker Alfons Bytautas RSA to create monotype prints using Gelli plates.

Monotype is a direct and painterly method for producing unique prints, made simply by the transfer of ink or paint from a non-absorbent surface onto paper. In this masterclass, we will experiment with monotype using a Gelli plate, a soft synthetic polymer which will allow us to make prints using water-based paints and without the use of a press.

In this in-depth and informative masterclass, we’ll explore the various methods and materials that can be used for Gelli printing, from direct transfer drawing to layering colour and texture. Watch Alfons creating a print here.

Gelli plate printmaking produces wonderful prints with glowing colours and a range of interesting textures and marks, an ideal technique for the home printmaker. With Alfons Bytautas’ guidance, you’ll explore the full range of monotype techniques possible with Gelli plate before working back into your prints with a variety of materials and techniques.

All materials will be provided but you should bring source materials such as sketchbooks and photos that will act as inspiration. This masterclass is suitable for complete beginners and experienced printmakers alike.
