Calling all artists – public art opportunity

Closing date 4 April 2025

We are seeking talented and imaginative artists to collaborate on a series of of roadside artworks as part of the A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy section.

Balfour Beatty are currently engaged in the dualling of the A9 section from Tomatin to Moy, working with Mott MacDonald as the Designer, and on behalf of Transport Scotland. The main construction works are due to commence in Spring 2025, with the road expected to become operational in Spring 2028.

As part of this project, Balfour Beatty have been commissioned to incorporate a series of unique artworks along this new 9.6 km stretch of road, providing a platform to create prominent and lasting works of art that will promote the local area, enrich the experience of travellers along this route, and help to celebrate the local environment and community.

We are therefore looking to collaborate with an artist, or group of artists working in collaboration, to facilitate the production of three different art installations, located in three separate locations identified along the Tomatin to Moy section of the A9. General, concept designs have been developed. The commission would involve the appointed artist(s) designing sculptures from a variety of mediums including wood and Cor-ten weathering steel. These sculptures will be at a variety of scales, from a large panel visible from the road to small human-scale sensory sculptures.

We are seeking expressions of interest from artists/groups, who would like the opportunity to collaborate with our Client, Designers, Contractors, and the Local Community to facilitate the production of the art installations.

Community engagement is crucial to the commission. The designs will be informed by a series of workshops where interested members from the local communities as well as other stakeholders will be invited to provide feedback and comment on developing designs and ideas. The artist(s) will be expected to lead and contribute to these.

For further information and detail on the proposals, preliminary designs, and ideas of timeframes, please email: [email protected] to receive an information pack.

This commission will be valued at £12,572 , inclusive of expenses but exclusive of VAT. This is based on an estimated 280 hours of work at the rates provided by The Scottish Artist Union.

Following receipt of the information pack, an Expression of Interest outlining why you are suitable for the Project, relevant experience and examples of your work, and a CV should be submitted to Balfour Beatty through Mott MacDonald at the email address outlined above by Friday 4th April 2025.
