About
Hospitalfield is an arts organisation based in the coastal town of Arbroath in the North East of Scotland founded in 1901. Hospitalfield have an international reputation in the visual arts for our artist development programmes through residencies and commissioning. Hospitalfield aims to support artists to make new work and give space to develop their practice.
Through our Programmes we work with artists at early, mid and established levels in their artistic practice to create new work to be experienced by, and invite questions from, the broad range of visitors that come to Hospitalfield.
Hospitalfield was the vision of the 19th century Scottish artist Patrick Allan Fraser and is considered one of Scotland’s most important Art and Crafts houses. In 1902 the house was left in Trust and was established as an art college and then post graduate art school. Through the Artist Residency and Commissions programmes Hospitalfield continues to be a site for artists to come to in order research, develop and make their work. Hospitalfield maintains strong national and international working partnerships and is a meeting place and cultural catalyst in the working lives of artists in Scotland and far beyond.
Hospitalfield are currently undertaking a major capital development which in 2022-23 will include the restoration of the 19th & 20th Century artist studios and the building of a new 21st century which includes sound and film editing suites for the purpose of hosting artists working in moving image, digital and sound work. With these new facilities we will have the resources to support the development of major moving image works by artists in Scotland and internationally. Hospitalfield are regularly funded by Creative Scotland for their Arts Programme and regularly partner on residencies, commissions and learning programmes with arts organisations, community trusts, international funders and artists.
