About

I manage, along with a dedicated team of volunteers, An Unexpected Gallery which is based at the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow. It is a grassroots gallery that started in June 2014.

The idea behind the gallery is to support artists in Scotland. We started with capital of £40 but thanks to the St Enoch Centre providing space for us we have developed into a warm and friendly place to visit for artists, customers and travellers.

Visual artists find it difficult to find a place where they can exhibit, get professional, artistic and moral support in Scotland. The Gallery works on a membership basis. For a small monthly sum we exhibit their art, which they are free to swap for newer pieces during their membership. We have no minimum term of membership and we accept art from artists still developing their practice, we are happy to be partnered with them during this stage of their journey.

As for Stuart Duffy, myself, I’m a creative portrait and documentary photographer. I have managed to re establish my own creative practice and run workshops and studios within the gallery and the St Enoch Centre.

To date we have never had a grant from any award body, even though we tried. However, we have ambitious plans for 2021, including partnering with a Scottish University to provide professional digital marketing support for our members, a new website coming online in January 2021 that will provide a shopping basket for each member of the gallery developing their creative practice.
